Delve Into The Reign Of King Rama V At Thawornwatthu Building
The distinctly red-coloured Thawornwatthu Building was originally the royal crematorium of Maja Vajirunhis. He was the eldest son of King Rama V and the Crown Prince. It was later converted into a library, then a museum dedicated primarily to commemorating the life and work of King Rama V. Located just a 20-minute drive west of S15 Sukhumvit Boutique Hotel in Asoke and quite near the Grand Palace, it is one of the finest examples of traditional Thai architecture with distinct touches of Gothic and Khmer influences noted.
Often referred to as the Great Beloved King, King Rama V did much to preserve the independence of the Siam from encroaching European colonisation through his policies and diplomacy. The exhibition hall of the museum displays several key documents from the time of his reign. This includes important speeches, books, and policy documents addressing such concerns as the abolition of slavery, national sovereignty, and utility development plans. It also features a 3D model of important architectural structures that date back to his era and a gallery of personal photographs.
These documents have been recognised as part of ‘The Heritage of World’s Memories’ by UNESCO. The structure features seven halls that are sectioned to host the King Rama V Memorial Exhibition and King Rama V Memorial Library.
