Plan A Visit To Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market
One of the most memorable experiences for visitors to Bangkok has to be the floating markets. They are richly steeped in history from the time Bangkok was nothing more than jungle till its more current skyline of towering office and apartment blocks, temples, and malls. An outing to a floating market is best undertaken at the weekend when you have ample time to explore, shop, and indulge in some delectable food.
The Khlong Lat Mayom floating market is famous for its wonderful food, beautiful scenery, and welcoming vendors. Located less than a half hours drive from the S15 boutique hotel in Asoke, it can also be reached via the BTS Sukhumvit Line to the Wongwian Yai BTS Skytrain Station.
Though the market is more of on-ground stalls, there is still a good presence of vendors selling wares from boats. The boats will in some places congregate, making it easier for visitors to shop. The market is particularly appreciated for its abundance of fresh produce. Deeper into the market you will also find clothing, housewares, and toys available for sale. Fresh flowers can be found at the riverside stalls.
Having a meal here is a unique experience as food vendors will park alongside the canal and cook food aboard the boat to be served to customers seated at low tables on the waterfront. Traditional Thai cuisine favourites like pad Thai and hoi tod are plentiful and freshly prepared. Most options will set you back about 30 baht per dish. You can also find plenty of food options on firm ground, though the pricing can be somewhat higher.
If you have the time, be sure to also pay a visit to Taling Chan. It is a larger market just 4 kilometres away. From here you can take a boat ride tour and enjoy the relaxing sway of the river and pleasant atmosphere along the way.
